Ghutti Hui Khichdee
|
A mix of daal and rice, cooked to a soft consistency |

Ingredients

1-cup (180 g) basmati (long grain rice)

1/2 cup (90 g) Dhuli Moong ki daal (Husked Green Gram)

2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)

1 tsp jeera (cumin seeds)

1/8 tsp heeng (asafoetida)

1 tsp salt or to taste

Preparation

Pick and wash the rice and the daal, wash well and place in a heavy based saucepan or a `handi’ along with the salt and about 4 cups water.
Bring to a boil and then lower the heat and simmer till the rice and daal are tender and soft, more like gruel. Adjust the water according to the consistency you desire.
Heat the ghee and add the jeera. When the seeds splutter, add the rice and lentil mixture, and mix well.
Serve hot accompanied by some pickle and yogurt.
