Savoury Semolina Cake

  • Semolina 2 cups (240 g)
  • Yogurt 1 cup
  • Vinegar/lemon juice 1 tsp
  • Salt 1 ˝ tsp or to taste
  • Oil 2 tbsp
  • Curry leaves 8-10
  • Mustard seeds 1 tsp
  • Pea-nuts, roasted and peeled ˝ cup
  • Whole red pepper, broken 1-2
  • Fruit salt or baking soda 1 tbsp


  • Mix the vinegar/lemon juice into the yogurt.
  • Mix the semolina and yogurt together till a smooth batter of dropping consistency, adding some water to it.

  • Add salt and keep aside.

  • In a flat based pan with a lid, heat the oil.

  • Add the mustard seeds, curry leaves, red peppers and peanuts and sauté till a little fried.

  • Mix in the fruit salt into the semolina mixture and pour it into the pan.

  • Cover and cook over low heat till cooked. Takes 15- 20 minutes.

  • Loosen edges and turn upside down into a serving plate and serve.
